in der Informationstheorie der Wert, der dem Zustand eines Mechanismus zukommt, wenn er unter anderen möglichen Zuständen eintritt. Die I. wird hiermit als mathematische Größe bestimmt. Als solche darf sie nicht mit dem semantischen Begriff der I. als Gehalt eines Zustandes verwechselt werden. Der semantische Begriff von I. wurde zuerst von Carnap und Bar-Hillel als die Klasse aller Aussagen, die von einer Aussage logisch impliziert werden, definiert. Anders wurde die I. von Dretske definiert: Ein Zustand e trägt die I., s ist F, wenn die bedingte Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass s F ist, gegeben e, gleich 1 ist. Hier werden F als Zustand des Senders s und e als Zustand eines beliebigen Empfängers betrachtet. Ist die oben genannte Bedingung erfüllt, so repräsentiert e die Tatsache, dass s F ist.
