In Bezug auf eine empirische Aussage wird dann von B. gesprochen, wenn sie mit den Beobachtungen übereinstimmt. Da eine solche Übereinstimmung immer nur unter dem Vorbehalt weiterer Beobachtungen feststellbar ist, kann eine Aussage aufgrund ihrer B. nur als wahrscheinlich bezeichnet werden (Bewährung). – Der Begriff der induktiven B. wird entsprechend der Unterscheidung in klassifikatorische, komparative und quantitative Begriffe expliziert: Ein klassifikatorischer Begriff der B. liegt dann vor, wenn die Bedingungen angegeben sind, unter denen eine Hypothese durch Erfahrungsdaten als bestätigt anzusehen ist. Ein komparativer Begriff der B. zieht die Vergleichsmöglichkeit zwischen B.en verschiedener Hypothesen in Betracht, bspw. wenn eine Hypothese (h) durch die Erfahrungsdaten besser bestätigt wird als eine andere Hypothese (h'). Der quantitative Begriff der B. bestimmt den Bestätigungsgrad, mit dem eine Hypothese aufgrund der Erfahrungsdaten bestätigt wird, durch einen numerischen Wert zwischen 0 und 1.
